In Memoriam

Many of my students may not have been alive during Anwar El-Sadat's lifetime. But he, along with Menachem Begin of Israel, did what many said could not be done: negotiate a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that has endured. President Jimmy Carter was instrumental in achieving the Camp David Accords.

For his courageous act of peace, Anwar El-Sadat was assassinated by elements within his own country on this date in 1981.
